Studies on the Quantitative Growth Analysis in Radish (Raphanus sativus L.)

Abstract
This study was conducted to obtain the basic informations for improving the yield, quality and cultural environment through understanding biomass production balance in radish. Three radish cultivars with different characteristics were used in quantitative growth analysis. Results are summarized as follows:
1. Growth curves for a whole plant, leaf and root dry weight, and Icaf area of three cultivars, `Minowase¢¥, `Jinju-daepyung¢¥ and `Joongguk-chungpi¢¥, ascended markedly from 28th day after sowing and showed similar tendencies with time in these three cultivars. `Joonggukchungpi¢¥, however, was low in leaf area and leaf weight as compared with other two, but the root weight was remarkably heavy.
2. Specific growth rates (SGR) fur whole plant weight, leaf weight and leaf area of three cultivars showed the maximum at 15¡28 days after sowing (DAS) and then rapidly decreased until 56 DAS. But specific growth rates for root weight of three cultivars were all different.
3. Specific leaf areas (SLA), leaf area ratios (LAR), leaf weight ratios (LWR), unit leaf area rates (ULAR) and unit leaf weight rote (ULWR) of three cultivars exhibited similar tendencies sowing maximum at 15¡18 DAS (primary cortex break stage) and than decreased ULAR corresponded with ULWR.
4. Growth curves for number of leaves and root length showed sigmodial pattern. `Minowase¢¥ had the largest number of leaves but `Joongguk-chungpi¢¥ had the smallest. Root length rate of `Minowase¢¥ was the fast and that of `Joongguk-chungpi¢¥ was similar to `Jinjudaepyung¢¥. T/R ratios and root shape indexes became stable at 29¡42 DAS.
5. Maximum period of sarplus weight (S) of `Joongguk-chungpi¢¥ and `Jinju-daepyung¢¥ were at 15¡18 DAS and that of `Minowase¢¥ was 29¡42 DAS. But minurnum periods of three cultivars did not correspond with each other as ¢¥Joongguk-chungpi¢¥ was 43¡56 DAS, Mlinowase¢¥ and `Jinju-dacpyung¢¥ were 57¡70 DAB. All of the first maximum periods of surplus weight corresponded with those of specific growth rate of root dry weight in each cultivar.
